What’s Plogging? It’s when you go jogging or walking and picking up trash that you come across on your way!
This ingenious movement, joining staying in shape with taking positive action for the environment, was born in Sweden. The word “Plogging” is a contraction of the word “jogging” and the Swedish phrase “Plocka upp” which means “pick up”.
WHY PLOGGING?
Plogging has numerous benefits:
-> It allows us to beautify our neighborhoods or wherever we run or walk.
-> It sensitizes people who frequent these places, whether because they see us picking up trash or because they just notice that the area is free of trash. Obviously, it’s less acceptable to litter a street that is clean than it is to add to litter that is already there.
-> Similar to interval training, which has been proven to be more effective than continuous training, plogging gets us more exercise and burns more calories than just a traditional jog or walk because we have to crouch, bend over, stop and then restart walking or running.
-> On the other hand, for less experienced joggers, the stops to pick up trash give us a chance to catch our breath. We can improve our running speed when we realize we’ll have these little breaks!
-> It adds a social and community element to our traditional solitary walk or run. Many plogging groups have formed in Quebec and across the world! For example:

-> It gives us more motivation to complete our walk or run, as our effort is evident in a quantifiable and concrete reduction of trash in our immediate environment.
